What to expect from sessions

I use a dual therapeutic coaching approach.  My work is holistic, systemic and relational.  As a trained and experienced mediator, my work is also conflict-informed.

What is therapeutic coaching?

Put simply, psychotherapy works in-depth with people’s psychology and lived experience.  My aim as a therapist is to support my clients to process emotions, become more self-aware and challenge limiting beliefs.  The purpose to is encourage emotional and internal change.  Coaching takes a more structured, cognitive approach.  The purpose is to encourage active, external change in clients.  I combine the best from both therapy and coaching to help you understand yourself and do deep, meaningful work while being solution and forward focused.  This means you are able to move forwards with confidence and self-awareness.

Coaching and psychotherapy share the same core competencies and follow the same ethical framework so using a hybrid therapeutic-coaching approach works smoothly and effectively.

What is conflict-informed?

I am an experienced civil and commercial mediator.  Meditation is a very formal and structured intervention and is a legal process.  As a mediator I am fluent in handling heated situations and high stakes conflict between people.  Should you be in conflict or a high stakes situation, I am able to support you through this although my sessions are not mediation.  This means what is discussed and agreed between people in my sessions is not legally binding.

What therapeutic coaching can be used for?

Therapeutic coaching is ideal if you want to make sense of something that feels complex and or complicated.  You may be in a transition or be going through loss and want the guidance of moving through it smoothly and carefully.  You may want to take the time to process your internal and external world with the help and guidance of a trained, able and experienced professional like me and be sure that you make the best decision for you in how you move forwards.  If you are looking for security, confidence and comfort while you move forwards, I am likely a good match for you.

What outcomes can be promised?

I do not promise any outcomes.  Your sessions are only as productive and useful as you make them.  Therapeutic coaching takes considerable dedication and commitment from you in and in-between sessions.

However, I can guarantee you will have my full attention, expertise and experience for the entire session.  I only work with a limited number of clients to ensure that each of my clients get the best from me.

Who is this best suited for?

I am most suited to work with individuals, couples and small groups of family members.  The majority of my clients come to me because they are conventionally successful in their work or businesses (in this context, when I say “success” I mean they have achieved what they wanted to achieve and may have a certain level of wealth or recourses at their disposal).  Yet this success can come with added pressure, loneliness, or even confusion about how to use resources or how to relate to people.  Oftentimes work life and personal life can become tangled together which leads to conflict or a feeling that life is unbalanced or not in harmony.  Many couples I work with experience challenges in communication, being aligned or intimacy.

If you question your way forwards and want to explore where you’re at, we are suited to work together.

What are the limitations of therapeutic coaching?

Therapeutic coaching is not designed to tell you how to live or work.  This work is non-directive: I am not a consultant so will not assess your life or work / business or design a plan on your behalf.  I do not tell my clients what they should do with their time or resources.  Instead, I empower you to use your prerogative and make decisions.  My work is collaborative which means together we can discuss what is the best way forwards for you and what changes can look like.  I work creatively and flexibly, so if you should want to get out a pen and paper and craft how changes and new approaches can look, I will support you by guiding, exploring and suggesting other perspectives.  I can support you to implement changes too. I am trained and able to work with you holistically and to support many areas of your work and life so there is a large scope.

What is the process of working together?

We will meet for sessions of 60 minutes at a time we both agree with.  We can either meet online via Zoom, face to face in Manchester or, under certain circumstances, I can travel to your office or home to visit you in your own environment.  If you are a couple or family, depending on the situation and nature of the work, I may suggest that sessions occur as a mix of altogether as a group as well as for each individual separately (one to one with me only).

My work is organic and tailored around you, which means there is no set number of sessions or a perfect framework or process I use.  However, our work together may look like the following - to begin, we will discuss where you are at currently and what has brought you to me.  Then, we can discuss what you would like to be different and how you would like to feel.  We will explore your current reality, day to day life and what hurdles you may face.  We will start to explore how to overcome obstacles, and I will accompany you as you implement changes in your life.

We will regularly discuss our work together to ensure that you are satisfied with our progress.

I do not rush this process.  Nor do I try to push you to make changes or explore topics if you do not feel is it necessary or the right time for you.  I am able and willing to work with you long term and handle the ambiguity and complexity with whatever comes up for you as an individual, a couple or family.

I understand that you may be away regularly for work, business or on holiday.  We can meet consistently, while being flexible to your schedule.  We will work together for as long as you require my services.
